Dr. Melissa Noel lead-authors a new study examining how family members mitigate adverse life outcomes for adult children of incarcerated parents focusing on the role of familial socialization. Key findings highlight four interconnected agents of parental incarceration socialization—“the talk,” familial beliefs, relationship with the incarcerated parent, and expression and navigation—that informs how they should navigate society. This socialization process involves learning what to say to others, how to interact with the criminal legal system, how people will perceive them, and challenges and opportunities they face.
