Visiting Scholar Venerable Wuhai (Leijie ZHU) is a Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies at Renmin University of China, with a research focus on English translations of Classic Chinese Buddhist texts. Ven Wuhai is at Temple University on a Graduate Internship in the Religion Department, working on the machine translation of Buddhist texts with Professor Marcus Bingenheimer.
She has served as lecturer at the Nanhai Buddhism Academy and worked as assistant to the translation project of Professor FANG Litian’s The Essence of Chinese Buddhist Philosophy 中国佛教哲学要义 hosted by Professor WEI Dedong. Ven Wuhai holds an M.A. (with honours) in Buddhist Studies from the University of Hong Kong (2021). Her research interests are wide-ranging and include Buddhist art, Dunhuang murals, murals and construction methods in tombs of the Han Dynasty and the Chinese idea of immortality, medieval Chinese calligraphy and handwritten manuscripts, but also include on-site research on stone steles, epigraphy and temples, which document China’s living and varied folk religions and their rituals.
