Study Abroad

Study Abroad

Studying abroad can be one of the most transformative experiences you’ll have as a college student. You’ll grow in confidence, independence and understanding of other societies and cultures by spending time in another country. Temple University students have many opportunities to study abroad through our international campuses in Rome and Japan, foreign exchange programs, and external partnerships. Additionally, the College of Liberal Arts offers numerous faculty-directed study abroad programs.

These programs provide opportunities for students to engage with diverse cultures, to learn new languages and to prepare themselves for a globally interconnected workplace while making progress towards degree requirements. Explore these opportunities through the program-specific pages linked below and prepare yourself to become a global citizen.

Read a little bit about our programs below and visit the Education Abroad and Overseas Campuses website to learn more about eligibility and application requirements!

Studying Abroad in France

Students declaring a major or minor in French are strongly encouraged to study abroad. Temple University has a summer program at the Sorbonne in Paris where students can immerse themselves in the language and contemporary cultural life. Credits earned through the Temple Sorbonne Program may be used toward the French major, minor, certificate and for satisfaction of the GenEd World Society requirement.

Studying abroad is a crucial part of language learning and intercultural development. One of the most rewarding experiences of learning French is traveling to Francophone countries to interact with native speakers and experience their cultures firsthand.

About Leipzig

Located in the heart of Europe in former East Germany, Leipzig has a population of over 600,000. In the past, Leipzig was a center of trade fairs, the seat of the German Supreme Court, the leading center of libraries, publishing houses and the German book trade, and the hub of European trade. One thing which remains unchanged is Leipzig’s significance as a city of music, the arts and, above all, science and learning. Founded in 1409, its university is Germany’s second oldest. Leipzig’s historic importance is self-evident from its numerous magnificent buildings, now mostly refurbished, which include first-class sights such as the Old Town Hall, the Old Exchange, the old and new exhibition centers, and the Monument to the Battle of Leipzig. Located in a beautiful area of vistas, history, and culture, Leipzig is only two hours from Berlin, one hour from Dresden and Weimar, and three hours from Prague.

Courses

During the program’s first week, students participate in an orientation that familiarizes them with the university and the city. The orientation also includes an excursion to Dresden. The following three weeks consist of intensive language study and excursions outside of the city. Students take placement tests upon arrival and enroll in the appropriate level of German. Beginning students, who must have at least one semester of German or its equivalent, enroll in German 1002 for four credits. Intermediate students enroll in German 1003 or German 2001 for three credits plus a one-credit Independent Study in German Studies. Students placing at advanced levels may enroll in other advanced German courses: Advanced Composition or Intensive German, plus a one-credit Independent Study in German Studies.

Please note, students must have successfully completed one semester of German language at the university level. Courses, costs, policies and programs are subject to change.

Study Abroad in Berlin

The College of Liberal Arts offers a six-week summer program in Berlin, Germany! Registration opens every December, so start planning now!

Berlin is rich in cultural and historical significance while also being a relatively affordable city that can be home base for other European travel destinations. As a city reinventing itself as a modern, forward-looking metropolis, it has to also show that it is aware of its past—specifically World War II—and the Berlin Wall dividing the city. This is a fascinating juxtaposition of the past and a vital present, illustrated by vibrant youth culture, numerous galleries and museums, and one of the world’s great orchestras and concert halls. Berlin finds itself at the political and social center of Europe and a hun of the discussion surrounding migration and the refugee crisis. It also has one of the best public transport systems to be found anywhere.

Studying Abroad in Italy

Students declaring a major or minor in Italian are encouraged to study abroad. Temple has its own campus in Rome, Italy, which offers courses in a variety of fields including language, art, architecture and international business. While previous Italian studies are not a requirement for program participation, we recommend you begin language study before traveling to Rome.

To help you take full advantage of your time abroad, Temple University’s Main Campus Italian program offers courses in beginner, intermediate and advanced Italian every semester. We highly encourage our participants to register for these courses before departing for Rome, because, in addition to familiarizing students with the country’s history and culture, studying the language of the host country provides students with the necessary skills required for communication.

Your journey of global awareness begins in Philadelphia but should not end in Rome. Upon returning, it’s recommended that students continue practicing their language skills by furthering their studies through the Italian program so that they may take full advantage of the Temple Rome experience.

Studying at Temple Rome already places students on a track to completing a BA, Minor in Italian Studies.

Planning to study at Temple Rome? Have already studied at Temple Rome? Some of the course you take there might count toward a degree in Italian Studies. Upper level courses focusing on Italy in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology, Art History, Political Science among others may count upon approval of the Italian Program Adviser. For more information? Email Professor Cristina Gragnani at .
